The Following sentences may be used as request sentences, or annoying sentences or sarcastic remarks.

Please try to be here at  eight O’ clock.
Please try to come by eight.
Please try to be punctual in future. (After be no action verb like go,come, write etc. is used)
Could you tidy up my cabin?
Can you turn off the TV please?
Could you turn down the audio system? It’s a bit louder.
The phone is ringing, could you answer for me?
Could you dust the carpet? It looks dirty
Can you ask Shane to call me? or to give me a ring?
Could you please move a little bit?

 NOTE:  Use Falling tone while speaking out the above sentences. (Rising tone will make them an order  or   annoying). Body language and facial expression must be in accordance with the words used in the request expressions.

 

The Following expressions are used purely as a request.

Will you please be here for some more time? Will you? ( As I have some more work)
Will you please help me lift this box. Will you?
Can I have some Cookies mom? Certainly
Are you going past the Bank? Please deposit this check for me. Will you?
(The helping verb are is used with We, you and they . The helping verb is is used with he,she and it.)
Excuse me, have you got a lighter? I am Sorry. I haven’t

Shall  I bring you a cup of coffee? Oh Sure
Could you lend me your pen  please? Oh yes , here it is.
Could you get  some sugar cubes for me. Certainly

Can I ask the Manager to do me a favor? Why not? He is a nice gentleman.

Pointing to  a huge rock eighty years old Mulla (Jester), declared that he has the same strength, what he had some fifty years back.  The on-lookers demanded a proof from Mulla. Mulla smiled and declared “ I can’t even shake this rock now, I couldn’t shake it fifty years back either.”


Some Key Words to express ability/inability

Good/ good at  - Not good/not good at

NOTE: Can and able to can’t be used in a same sentences.

For each of the following model sentences we have given five types (1.Simple, 2.negative, 3.yes/no, 4.Negative question and 5.‘wh’ question.), so that the speaker can speak out in whatever mood he/she wants to.

Model sentences

She can ride a bicycle

she can’t ride a bicycle.

Can she ride a bicycle?

Can’t she ride a bicycle. ( I am surprised to know that she can’t ride a bicycle)

What can she ride, a bicycle or a motor bike ?

He can speak Spanish fluently.

He can’t speak Spanish , but he is good in English.

Shane is a good swimmer

NOTE:  Incapable =  Not capable

Ability with reference to a future activity

Ability with reference to a Past  activity

I couldn’t see the dentist last night.

I wasn’t able to see Lara yesterday. (=I was unable to see Lara yesterday)

Sorry, we  couldn’t finish the work yesterday.

Were you  able to locate the bank last week ?(in the town)

NOTE: If the person A or B is plural I am becomes we are and I becomes We

Parting with Friends

A.  Well it’s getting late,  I have to leave now (Else  I will miss the flight.)
B.  I am sorry that you have leave now.
A.  Excuse me  dude, Won’t you?
B.  Certainly.  I hope you will be back soon . Take care.
A.  Nodding the head in agreement.

Parting in a hurry

INFORMAL MEETING
 Type - A
A. Hi. Jack how are you?
B. Fine James and you?/Fine, how about you?
A. Fine/Just Fine.

Type B
A. Hello. Jack how do you do?
B. How do you do James?
A. How are the things?/How is the world with you?
B. Fine

Type C
A. Hello. Man! Where are you? (With a pat or handshake or a mild hug)
B. Hi James How strange to see you in New York? Everything is O.K?
A. Fine Buddy/dude

Type D (Meeting after short break.)
A.  Hello./Hi How is every thing?
B.  Fine, thanks, what about you/how about you?
A.  And your family?
B. Doing well.


Type E ( Meeting after a short break.)
A. Hal–lo Jay (James)
B. Oh. Jack. What a surprise, man?
A. Surprised to see me? (=Are you surprised to see me?)
B. Sure. I thought You were in Berlin.
C. I was, I got back yesterday. (= I returned yesterday.) – ( but between was and I is more formal.)
A. It’s good to see you again.
B. I too have the same feelings. (Me too have the same feeling – Not acceptable by some people.)


FORMAL MEETING
 Greeting the fellow workers
A.  Hello Good Morning. (With a smile)
B.  Good morning How are you? (With a smile)
A. Fine thanks.

Boss greeting the workers.

Boss. Hello Good morning to everybody.
Workers. Good Morning sir,
Boss. I hope everything  is fine and smooth.
Workers. Nodding their heads with a mild smile.
